Gay Dads and Modern Families

In honour of Fathers Day, Out Takes celebrates by looking at some of cinema’s most inspiring (and in some cases, campiest) gay dads. From camp classics like THE BIRDCAGE to raw dramas like ANY DAY NOW, these are films that grapple with, and ultimately celebrate, the complexities of being – o013111_modern_family110131120337r in some cases, trying to be – a gay father.

We’re joined by Rodney Chiang-Cruise, the convener of Gay Dads Australia, to look at how the representation of gay fatherhood in film has changed, and why seeing gay dads on screen is so important.

We also speak with Rebecca Mostyn, Screen Australia’s Manager of Research and Strategy, about the Seeing Ourselves: Reflections on Diversity in TV Drama report, released just last week. The biggest survey into on-screen television representation in nearly 70 years, Seeing Ourselves looks at how minorities have been represented on screen, and where that representation falls short, asks what can be done to facilitate equal on-screen representation.

Essential viewing: The Birdcage (1996, Dir Mike Nichols)

Hungry for more: Any Day Now (2012, Travis Fine).
