This week on OUT TAKES we celebrate the Emmys by looking at diversity on the small screen. This year’s pool of Emmy nominees was more diverse than ever before, and a significant number of LGBT television makers took home the top awards: think Rupaul, Jill Solway and Sarah Paulson. We look at some of our favourite LGBT Emmy winners, and their boundary pushing contributions to the small screen.
We also speak with Michael Ebeid, CEO of SBS, about the Seeing Ourselves: Reflections on Diversity in Australian TV Drama report, released earlier this month. The biggest survey into on-screen television representation in nearly 70 years, Seeing Ourselves looks at how minorities have been represented on screen, and where that representation falls short, asks what can be done to facilitate equal on-screen representation. Michael makes the case for greater on screen diversity, and runs through the various SBS invites seeking to facilitate better representation of minority groups.
