Masculinity and Male Bodies on Screen
This week on Out Takes we take a look at the way that Hollywood has deployed the male body as a metonym for masculinity in film. Our guest is Peter Lehman, the Director of the Center for Film, Media and Popular Culture at Arizona State University, who just over 20 years ago published what wneon_bull_film_posterould become one of the most seminal enquiries into how men’s bodies are represented on our screens.

In RUNNING SCARED, Lehman argues that by hiding male bodies from explicit representation, Hollywood culture preserves the ‘power’ of the male phallus, and perpetuates the ‘male mystique’. We chat with Lehman about some of the anxieties that underscore the representation of men’s bodies on screen, and how Hollywood’s portrayal of men reinforces the power of hegemonic masculinity.

We also chat with Gabriel Mascaro, the director of NEON BULL, to discuss the way that NEON BULL locates its exploration of machismo and masculinity in the representation of the male body. Called ‘lyrically engaging and deeply sensual’ by Indie Wire, NEON BULL is a powerful exploration of masculinity, and the line between what is human and what is animal.
Essential viewing: Neon Bull (2016, Dir. Gabriel Mascaro)
