Queer Screen’s MARDI GRAS FILM FESTIVAL is back in 2017 so OUT TAKES decided to celebrate its return by taking a closer look at this fantastic festival and its jam-packed program.

To begin, we were joined by Festival Director Paul Struthers to talk about this year’s formidable lineup: it boasts more trans, female centric and P.O.C. stories than ever before, as well as nearly 100 screenings of high profile Hollywood flicks and international arthouse films across New South Wales.

Next, we spoke with Tom Brown, the director of PUSHING DEAD, a new comedy starring Donald Glover. PUSHING DEAD tells the story of a struggling HIV positive writer, who accidentally deposits a $100 check and is dropped from his health plan for earning too much.

Finally, we looked at the MY QUEER CAREER program – a competition for up and coming film makers. We chatted with the three Melbourne based film makers showcasing short films as part of the program: DANCE CARD, COMING HOME and PRASIZZLER QUEEN OF THE DESSERT.

The Mardi Gras Film Festival runs from February 15 to March 2.
