Gay High School Musicals

Gay High School Musicals

This week on OUT TAKES class was in session. We took stock of our favourite gay high school musicals: coming-of-age films that are a little bit camp and a lot of fun; that use song and dance to export us to our angst ridden teenage years.

Our guests were John Butler, the director of HANDSOME DEVIL, and Ben Baur, the star of SOMETHING LIKE SUMMER, the new musical romance from the makers of JUDAS KISS.

To begin, we spoke with director John Butler about his new film HANDSOME DEVIL, a story of unlikely friendship between to boys at an elite private school in Ireland. We looked at what it is about gay high school musicals that continues to draw audiences.

Ben Baur rose to fame with the critically lauded web series, THE HUNTING SEASON. He joined us to look at his new high-school romance, SOMETHING LIKE SUMMER. Charting the relationship of two high school sweethearts over a number of years, SOMETHING LIKE SUMMER puts a sweet (if melodramatic) spin on the Gay High School Musical.

Essential viewing: Emo the Musical (Dir. Neil Triffet, 2016)

Hungry for more: Camp (Dir. Todd Graff, 2016); Handsome Devil (Dir. John Butler, 2016).
