This week on Out Takes we explored the queer film festival circuit. Each year more than 200 queer film festivals take place internationally. The queer film festival has become a staple of arts calendars across the globe. But are queer film festivals true to their activist and artistic roots? Or are they commercial enterprises seeking to capitalise on the pink dollar?
In his new text, ‘The Queer Film Festival: Popcorn And Politics’, Stuart Richards examines the queer film festival as a representative snapshot of the current state of queer cinema and community based film festivals. He joined us on Out Takes to look at the tension between the social ethos of queer cinema and its need to be financially viable.
We also spoke with Nashen Moodley, the Festival Director of the Sydney Film Festival – one of the world’s longest running film festivals, which is currently in swing. This year’s festival boasts a formidable queer lineup including titles like I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO and CALL ME BY YOUR NAME. But does the screening of queer films at mainstream festivals harm the viability of queer film festivals? Take a listen to this Out Takes exclusive interview to find out what Moodley thinks!
