Queering Bonnet and Bustle Films

This week on Out Takes, to coincide with the theatrical release of LADY MACBETH, we looked at films that subvert the ‘bonnet and bustle’ genre: films that imbue its female protagonists with autonomy, élan and independence, and films that set queer love stories against it: think PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES and THE DIARIES OF MISS ANNE LISTER.

Our guest was Melbourne born cinematographer Ari Wegner, whose latest film LADY MACBETH furnishes a bold new take on the bonnet and bustle genre. Set in rural England in 1865, LADY MACBETH tells the story of a woman sold into a loveless marriage, who begins a passionate affair with her husband’s farmhand while he is away. Wegner chats to us about her new film, and how it subverts the bonnet and bustle paradigm by exploring a series of powerful themes: race, class, gender and power.

Essential viewing: Lady Macbeth (Dir. William Oldroy, 2016)

Hungry for more: Tipping the Velvet (Dir. Geoffrey Sax, 2002)
