Queer Young Love Cinema

The Out Takes crew headed back to high school for this program and the heady days of young love, looking at queer films that celebrate the angst ridden complexities of high school crushes: think THE EDGE OF SEVENTEEN and BARASH.

Our guest was Dylan Gelula, star of THE FIRST GIRL I LOVED, which is now showing in cinemas around the country. THE FIRST GIRL I LOVED follows two teenage girls wrestling with their sexuality at a Los Angeles high school. It won the Best of Next audience award at Sundance last year. We spoke with Gelula about why film makers keep heading back to high school to explore young love, and how THE FIRST GIRL I LOVED compares to other films that deal with high school crushes.

Essential viewing: Edge of Seventeen (Dir. David Morton, 1998)

Hungry for more: Barash (Dir. Michal Vanik, 2015)
