Queer Scandinavian Film

This week on Out Takes we celebrate the SCANDINAVIAN FILM FESTIVAL by spotlighting some of our favourite queer films from the land of Abba, Lego and flat-pack furniture: think BROTHERHOOD and SEBASTIAN.

We also speak with Guðmundur Arnar Guðmundsson, the director of HEARTSTONE, which screens at the Festival later this month. Set in a sleepy Icelandic fishing village, HEARTSTONE tells the story of a young man who discovers that he has feelings for his best friend as he watches him pursue a young woman.

Our next guest is Alice McShane, the coordinator of the SCANDINAVIAN FILM FESTIVAL. Alice joins us to talk about the Festival, Scandinavian cinema culture and queer representation in Scandinavian film.

Finally, we turn our attention to the new biopic from Dome Karukoski: TOM OF FINLAND. Spanning decades and continents, TOM OF FINLAND tells the remarkable story behind some of the most iconic drawings in gay culture, and the man who drew them. It screens nationally this month as part of the Festival.
