This week on Out Takes we celebrate the night life by looking at some of our favorite disco films: think 54 and YOU CAN’T STOP THE MUSIC. These are films that revel in the nostalgia of the night life by taking us back to the dance floor and, at least in the case of the re-edited and re-released version of Mark Christopher’s 54, deserve a place amongst the queer classics.
Our guest is C Fitz, the director of JEWELS CATCH ONE, which screened earlier this month as part of the Melbourne Documentary Festival. JEWELS CATCH ONE chronicles the rise and fall of what was widely dubbed the unofficial Studio 54 of the West Coast. We speak with Fitz about JEWELS CATCH ONE and what it is that makes life under the disco ball so ripe for cinematic exploration.
Essential viewing: 54 (Dir. Mark Christopher, 1998)
Hungry for more: PARADISCO (Dir. Stéphane Ly-Cuong, 2002)
