Australia is one of eight countries in the world where a commercial greyhound industry exists. This is in addition to the UK, New Zealand and Ireland, Macau, Mexico and Vietnam.
In recent months, the greyhound industry has been put in the spotlight nationally over allegations into live baiting. A huge fall out in the industry has followed, while sadly we recently received the terrible news from Queensland in relation to over 50 greyhounds found deceased and discarded in bushland.
While the exact number of greyhounds bred annually is unclear, the national greyhound racing industry is said to have named over 13,000 racings dogs in 2013 alone. Not all dogs however go on to race and end up in shelters and rescues around the country.
The work shelters and rescues do into rehabilitating and rehoming greyhounds is broad-ranging and we look forward to exploring the issue further over the coming months.
April is Greyhound Adoption Month and on this edition of the program, we’re getting to know the breed and the people who love them.
Coming up on this edition of Pets-A-Loud:
- We meet Lisa White, president and founder of Friends of the Hound – a volunteer based, not for profit greyhound rescue in QLD and NSW to find out how the fall out has impacted their work.
- Greyhound foster carer, adopter and all round greyhound fan and JOY volunteer Hamish joins us in the studio to talk about his heart dog Bob and his foster Jessie (photographed).
