MIFF 2013 Film Line-Up
The program for the Melbourne International Film Festival was launched earlier this week. Some expected highlights include Upstream Color, a science-fiction-drama surrounding an ageless organism that sees identitiy become an illusion. With an unconventional script that ditches the traditional plot structure, the film has been igniting curiosity the world over.
Another piece sure to generate talk is Jafar Panahi’s Closed Curtain. The Iranian director was banned from filmmaking for 20 years in 2010 after being found guilty of propaganda against the Iranian government. Although he received a rapture of support from filmmaking colleagues and human rights organisations, he was sentenced to six years jail. His wife, daughter, and fifteen friends were also arrested. While he was waiting for the result of his appeal, Panahi made the video diary documentary This Is Not A Film, which was smuggled out of the country via a USB stick hidden inside a cake.
Saturday Magazine’s resident film critic Tara Judah joins hosts David Hunt and Brett Sweeting this week to give us the rundown on this year’s MIFF, as well as her verdict on Johnny Depp’s new Disney flick, The Lone Ranger. In-case you haven’t heard, that’s the film that sees Depp star as a Native American, something which has clearly opened a few racial debates.
