Last Friday, Senator David Feeney (ALP) pledged the following to lobby group Australian Marriage Equality:
I pledge to vote for the marriage equality bill that the Prime Minister has committed to introducing into Parliament, if our Labor Government is re-elected. If our Government is not re-elected, I pledge to vote for any reasonable marriage equality bill that comes before Parliament, provided it supports full equality, does not compel religious organisations to conduct ceremonies against their faith and if I am permitted a conscience vote by my Party.
Senator Feeney had earlier been criticised for not supporting an equal marriage bill introduced by the Greens’ Lynn MacLaren. The change would have seen legislation introduced allowing state-based same-sex marriage.
That bill was defeated, although Senator Feeney claims that his reasons for not supporting the bill are not a lack of support for equal marriage, but an objection to some of the details in the Greens’ bill. However, a picture of the senator was featured on Australian Marriage Equality’s Vote4Love website with a red cross indicating that his official stance was against same-sex marriage.
Senator Feeney and Australian Marriage Equality’s Tim Peppard chatted to Saturday Magazine’s Pete Dillon and Jimmy Bourke on August 17. Listen to the audio clip below.
