Samantha Westbrooke Executive Manager, Conservation & Advocacy National Trust talks to Macca and Michael about the Victorian Government proposal to retire and redevelop all of Melbourne’s 44 ageing high-rise public housing estates by 2051.
Samantha discusses why it is important to look at the diversity of heritage values etc, but we do not have details of the actual nomination (we did not nominate the towers and the nomination is confidential) and we are not involved in the assessment process, that is Heritage Victoria.
The National Trust is concerned that the Victorian Government proposal to retire and redevelop all of Melbourne’s 44 ageing high-rise public housing estates by 2051 is being conducted without the necessary assessment of the inherent cultural heritage values of these places. As should be the case with any re-development proposal, these sites should be assessed prior to any decision making or commencement of works.
