Sally and Macca talk to Riya Rajesh, Policy and Research Officer Victorian Student Representative Council (VicSRC).

Riya Rajesh,  recently conducted a new piece of research around LGBTIQA+ student experiences in Victorian schools, they discussed the outcome of this research and what has been found?  How was the research developed and conducted to get the best information? Now you have this data and information, what are the next steps to inform the sector and improve the lives of LGBTIQA+ students?

Riyah’s research noted the real lack of data around this aspect of the school experience for LGBTIQA+ students and the research has been supported by the Healthy Equal Youth grant scheme.

Victorian Student Representative Council to share a recent piece of research we have worked on, around LGBTIQA+ student experiences in Victorian schools

As the peak body for Victorian students, we consistently hear that many queer students are facing discrimination at school which impacts their wellbeing and engagement. While this is clearly a priority for Victorian students, we noticed that there is a real lack of data around this aspect of the school experience for LGBTIQA+ students. Given this, we decided to bridge this gap in research with the support of funding from the Healthy Equal Youth grant scheme

The value of co-research:

What makes this project unique and especially valuable is its co-research basis. In approaching this project, we recognised the value of combining lived experience expertise with existing research. We did this by empowering a student co-researcher, Disha, to shape each aspect of the research process. Through this, VicSRC aimed to gather a comprehensive understanding of this research area in a way that is genuinely reflective of what students want and need to convey. You can read the report here!
