Tamzyn and Macca talk to Yvonne Breitwieser-Faria,  a lecturer at Curtin Law School teaching criminal and public international law. She is an interdisciplinary scholar with expertise in atrocity law and public international law. Currently, she is researching the relationship between legal obligations of States to prevent atrocity crimes and State responsibility. She is also researching the implications of climate change and other human rights violations, and the use of AI on the prevention of atrocity crimes.

“Only five days after the arrest warrant against former Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte was issued, he was apprehended and immediately put on a plane to The Hague to face charges before the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The prompt action – and the fact he is the first former Asian head of state before the ICC – have been heralded as “a pivotal moment for the court”.
