Nevena and Macca talk to Ali Khan, live in the studio.
Ali Khan is a 2019 Churchill Fellow and a passionate advocate for addressing domestic violence in LGBTQIA+ communities, particularly among gay men. A survivor himself, Ali travelled across the globe researching how different countries approach family and intimate partner violence within same-sex relationships. His findings have informed groundbreaking policy recommendations in Australia, highlighting the need for inclusive support services and greater awareness of the unique challenges faced by queer men. Ali now works with organisations and community leaders to create safer environments and provide culturally sensitive pathways to healing and justice.
Having lived experience of domestic violence, he understands the challenges facing queer people accessing support and negotiating the justice system which primarily views victims as heterosexual women, and abusers as heterosexual men. He started sharing his story among his friends in the gay and lesbian community and learnt not only had some of them also had experienced domestic violence, they faced similar challenges in accessing support.
He started thinking about whether there were some strategies and ideas which could be adopted by the ACT to enhance support for gay male survivors, based on the extensive work underway in overseas jurisdictions.
He then pitched his proposal to the Churchill Trust, was awarded a Fellowship in 2019, and travelled to Aotearoa New Zealand, Canada and the United Kingdom to conduct his research in 2023.
