Macca, Paul and John talk to Paul Briggs, a Yorta Yorta leader, been awarded who has been recently, honorary doctorate by La Trobe University, for his lifelong dedication to Indigenous empowerment and social justice, particularly in northern Victoria. The award was presented during a NAIDOC Week ceremony, recognizing his significant contributions to community development, health, education, sport, economic advancement, and cultural preservation.
The honorary doctorate was bestowed upon Briggs in recognition of his leadership and unwavering commitment to Aboriginal people in Shepparton and across the nation, according to La Trobe University. His work includes the establishment of the Munarra Centre for Regional Excellence in Shepparton, which aims to improve health, wellbeing, and prosperity for the community.
He was also a key figure in the Rumbalara Football Netball Club and the development of the Munarra Centre, as reported by The Advertiser.
The award was presented during a graduation ceremony in Shepparton, according to La Trobe University. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Theo Farrell, highlighted Briggs’ embodiment of the university’s values of leadership, reconciliation, and equity. The recognition also aligns with the start of NAIDOC Week, a period celebrating the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
