Nevena and Fiona talk to Dr Natasha Ginnivan, research fellow at UNSW’s Ageing Futures Institute
Natasha argues that we are on the cusp of an age liberation movement.
She points to the emergence of groups such as the Modern Elder Academy (MEAx) and Silver Sirens as vanguards of the movement.
- Currently 16% of the Australian population is aged 65 and over and by 2050, it is estimated this figure will be 25%, do we need to be rethinking how we age?
- If 25% of the population is meant to be in retirement by 2050, what will this mean for work and how we conceptualise people over the age of 65?
- There are many negative stereotypes associated with people over 65. How might ww go about dispelling dated ways of thinking?
- Research suggests that having more positive ageing expectations can add an average of 7.5 years to your life. Why is what?
- For many older LGBTIQ+ people, ageing can mean discrimination from younger people in our communities and a sense of disconnection from queer lifestyles. What can be done to challenge this?
