Professor Zachary Cooper, The Ethics of Artificial Intelligence and AI technology and its embedded biases.
In the news recently was an incident involving the editing of a female MP’s body, which was attributed to AI automation. News channel Nine, who produced the image, blamed an ‘automation’ error in Photoshop. A response from Adobe, the company behind Photoshop, “cast doubt” on Nine’s claim, according to the framing of multiple news outlets. “Any changes to this image would have required human intervention and approval,” a spokesperson said.
Some of the questions and issues raised: Is gender discrimination inherent in AI models? If so, why is this the case? Can AI models be modified against gender discrimination? What would this involve? Beyond gender based discrimination, what other biases have we seen in AI models? Do you have any examples of how these biases are embedded in the models? How might AI models, which are rapidly being used in creative and advertising work, affect these industry’s outputs?
