Using data from the Australian Child Maltreatment Study (ACMS), this new research examined rates of mental health disorders and health risk behaviours in people with diverse gender identities and associations with five types of child maltreatment.
  • 81% of Individuals with diverse gender identities have experienced child maltreatment. They more commonly experienced all five types of child maltreatment than either men or women.
  • They were more likely to experience PTSD, anxiety, cannabis dependence, self-harm, and attempted suicide than men and women.
  • As we have previously found across the population (men, women, and gender diverse individuals) in the ACMS, people experiencing sexual abuse and emotional abuse were substantially more likely to have poorer mental health in their adulthood.
  • But this relationship is even stronger for those who have a diverse gender identity. While all maltreatment types can lead to negative mental health outcomes, sexual abuse and emotional abuse may have the most severe consequences for poorer mental health outcomes.
  • In the gender diverse subgroup, sexual and emotional abuse were most strongly associated with PTSD, anxiety, cannabis dependence, self-harm, and attempted suicide.
