Acting Melbourne Lord Mayor Nick Reece, joins Sally and Macca for the latest updates in the city of Melbourne,
An informal Koreatown has existed for some time around Healeys Lane, with at least 25 Korean restaurants located in and around the laneway.
Council voted to ratify the precinct at Tuesday’s Future Melbourne Committee meeting. The tick also makes way for the installation of four traditional Korean totem poles, or jang-seung, to mark the entrances to the precinct on Lonsdale and Little Lonsdale streets.
At almost three metres high, the jang-seung will add to the atmosphere and entice more visitors to the area – creating photo moments that will be tagged and shared across the globe.
The Consulate-General of the Republic of Korea in Melbourne will fund the production and installation of the jang-seung, while Council will cover the costs of project management and relevant approvals.
Establishing an official Koreatown will add to the vibrancy and popularity of Melbourne’s rich multicultural scene, which includes the well-known Chinatown and Greek precincts.
Koreans are one of the City of Melbourne’s top 10 diaspora, with more than 2,500 Koreans calling the municipality home and more than 25,000 across Victoria.
South Korea is emerging as a hot new must-visit destination for Melburnians, with a record 90,000 Australians visiting South Korea in 2022–23.
