Fiona and Madeliene speak to Jack Hayes PhD candidate (ANU). Global Institute for Women’s Leadership.
His research expertise includes LGBTI+ representation in Australian politics, democratic and electoral health, and good governance in public service.
Mr Hayes is also a Researcher at the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership, chaired by the Hon. Julia Gillard AC, a multi-disciplinary research institute that brings together world-leading expertise across academic disciplines and fields in the areas of workplace gender equality and women’s leadership.
He is a United States – Australia Alliance Next Generation leader alumnus, a network of public servants, academics and working professionals seeking to improve the efficacy and longevity of the Alliance. He is also a member of EveryGen, a group of policy experts, academics and industry professionals concerned with addressing barriers to intergenerational justice in Australia.
“Newly published research has found clear evidence that openly lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex, and queer+ (LGBTIQ+) Australian politicians were disproportionately targeted with personal abuse on social media at the last federal election. Given global trends, it’s unlikely to be any different this year.
Simply logging off is not an option for candidates, who need to communicate with voters. As a result, some politicians will continue to face risky online visibility”.
