Earlier this year, John Berry made history when he became the first openly gay ambassador to a G-20 nation. That G-20 nation just happened to be Australia, and Saturday Magazine’s Pete Dillon was lucky to receive the rare honour of being granted an interview with our new US Ambassador.
Back in 2009, US President Barack Obama announced his intention to nominate Berry as director of the Office of Personnel Management. Predictably, the move was met with some strong opposition amongst America’s conservative political groups. Nevertheless, the Senate confirmed Berry’s nomination, making him the first agency director of the Obama administration.
According to the Human Rights Campaign, John Berry is the highest ranking openly gay official to serve in the executive branch in any U.S. administration. When he’s not in Australia, Berry lives in Washington D.C. with his partner of 17 years (and husband of 3 months), Curtis Yee.
