To celebrate the anti-hero Italian American film maker maestro’s Martin Scorsese exhibition now open in Melbourne at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image AKA ACMI.

Sonja speaks to ACMI’s Assistant Curator Fiona Trigg about this new sensational exhibition simply called SCORSESE.

‘Curated by the Deutsche Kinemathek – Museum for Film and Television in Berlin, SCORSESE will feature 600 objects including “storyboards, hand annotated film scripts, unpublished production stills, costumes, film clips and more” — some of which are from the private collections of Robert DeNiro and Scorsese himself.

Exclusive to Melbourne are five never before seen costumes from films such as ‘The Aviator’, ‘Hugo’ and ‘Gangs of New York’, all designed by three-time Academy Award® winner, Sandy Powell.’

Sonja also talks to three fantastic women director and writer Anya Beyersdorf, producer Nicole Coventry and actress Marlo Kelly about an intriguing short film showing at the St Kilda Film Festival: Vampir.

ON VAMPIR:

‘The film is written/directed by Anya Beyersdorf, actress turned AWGIE award winning writer and director, currently shortlisted by the Weinstein Company for the SFF/Lexus Fellowship on the strength of Vampir. The film is produced by emerging producer Nicole Coventry (Producer’s Assistant on Jane Campion’s Top of The Lake 2, and Production Executive on SyFy Hunters), executive produced by GUILTY (Tony Rogers and Jason Byrne) and co-produced by Simon de Bruyn.The short stars Tony Rogers (advertising director and creator of cult hits Wilfred, How to Talk Australians and Bruce currently shooting with Screen Australia funding) in a rare acting role.Cinematographer Warwick Field brought home the ACS award for best cinematography in a short film (Gold) for Vampir at the Vic/Tas ACS awards last year. The film, lensed on vintage Kowa anamorphics, has a strikingly moody look complemented by an incredible score by John Kilbey of the Bhagavad Guitars.

The stylistically epic agitprop-esque film is trim at 8 minutes, and focuses on a single brutal encounter between a heavily tattooed man who may be a vampire, and some local youths who may be worse creatures even than he.

The film marks a continuing collaboration between the director and actor, whose roles were reversed in the 2006 Melbourne Film Festival feature Rats and Cats directed by Tony Rogers in which Anya played the lead female role. GUILTY and Beyersdorf’s Sydney-based Gifthorse Collective are continuing their collaborations with several projects in development on the horizon.’
