Interviews: It’s IDAHOBIT Day- a day to celebrate progress made and to continue to drive change!

This week on Sidelined, Soupy, Demetra and Jacs are recognising International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersex Discrimination and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) day. IDAHOBIT is the anniversary of May 17, 1990 when the World Health Organisation (WHO) removed homosexuality from the Classification of Diseases. The purpose of IDAHOBIT is to celebrate the progress made since then while also raising awareness for the discrimination that LGBTIQA+ people still face.

Every person, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, deserves the right to participate in sports without fear, prejudice, or exclusion. Together, we can create safe and welcoming sporting environments that celebrate diversity and foster inclusivity.

In the Sidelined Sporting Highlight, Antoun Issa Chair– Collingwood Pride is doing just that! The AFL Pride group has been rebranded and reinvigorated so that members of the LGBTIQA+ community can head to the footy, relax and have fun! Head to their socials – Instagram and facebook, get involved and be a part of something really special in the history of the game. (2:37)

In A Chat With Jacs, Jacs spoke with Kristen Stone Hutchison, Development Officer from Lacrosse Victoria about how Lacrosse is making huge inroads in being an inclusive and welcoming sport for the LGBTIQA+ community. There are so many awesome events on in the coming days and the Lacrosse Together Cup to look forward to in October. There a call out to get involved and see whether passing, catching, cradling, scooping and shooting the ball is your thing! And congrats Kristen for being named a finalist as 2023 Pride In Sport LGBTQ Ally of the Year. (12:24)

In Demetra’s Drama, Demetra talks with Evelyn Boy-Mena, Gender Technical Officer in the World Health Organisation (WHO)  Department of Gender, Human Rights and Equity – Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (GRE-DEI) about how the WHO came to remove homosexuality from the Classification of Diseases, the aims of WHO in supporting LGBTIQA+ human rights and how you can get involved. Evelyn spoke about Mpox (monkeypox) and the many events WHO is holding online to keep everyone educated and safe. (22:00)

In Soupy’s Surprising Sport, Jonny Paulet, Mr VicBear 2023 joins us in the JOY Studio to share his great work in getting Victorian bears active! One way to do that is taking part in Active Bear events such as an axe throwing competition. Soupy and Jonny go axe to axe in a JOY Studio-safe best of three axe competition play off with Soupy needing a lesson or three! If you are a bear now is the time to get active and join in the fun! (33:00)
