Interview – Craig Foster explains The Voice to Parliament with Jacs

In this episode of Sidelined Extra Time we are delighted to chat with former Socceroo captain, sports broadcaster and human rights advocate Craig Foster about The Voice to Parliament – what it is, what it is not, the significance of the Uluru Statement from the Heart, why a Yes vote is vital, and the gift we have been given to support lasting and impactful change for our First Nations people.

Craig was instrumental in highlighting unethical practices during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar with the treatment of migrant works and the LGBTIQA+ community in what he described as being the “most problematic and controversial World Cup in history”. As the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup is fast approaching with Australia and New Zealand jointly hosting from the 20 July to the 20 August, Craig shares that over one billion eyes will be on Australia – a first world country where the rights of Indigenous peoples, refugees and asylum seekers continue to be violated. Craig calls on Australia’s women’s national soccer team, the Matildas to take a stand on important social issues and use the power of sport to drive equality, inclusion and justice.

A great resource Craig recommends is The Voice to Parliament handbook written by Thomas Mayo, Aboriginal and Kalkalgal, Erubamle Torres Strait Islander man and Kerry O’Brien, one of Australia’s most respected journalists with six Walkley Awards.

Hear the authors interviewed on JOY 94.9 Drive by host Warren Andrew explaining the why the Voice should be enshrined in the Constitution, and how it might function to improve policies affecting Indigenous communities, and genuinely close the gap on inequalities at the most basic level of human dignity.

This is Sidelined Extra time delivering to you insightful interviews with sporting leaders and legends focused on making sport safe, welcoming, inclusive and fun for the Rainbow community.
