Co-Creators and Theatre-makers Adena Jacobs and Aaron Orzech are here to talk about their production– Book Of Exodus Part I and Part II at Theatre Works in St Kilda. Part I is on from 31 May to 18 June. Part II is on from 18 to 29 October.
Our guests have worked on a couple of shows before, with teenagers, and Exodus is the third in the trilogy of those works. But, this time they’re working with children (between 8 and 12yo) because in the book of Exodus they’ve highlighted the idea of ‘The children of Israel’ and thought ‘What if they were…?’ and from that ‘What does it mean for the foundational story of violence?’ Part I has 2 sets of 2 actors whereas Part II has about 40.
Our guests then talk about their respective theatre backgrounds and previous work; including Adena starting a company in 2010 called Fraught Outfit ,which this production is with. They spent a long time researching and debating an interpretation of the text in Exodus and then ‘funnelling’ it into a one-hour show, where they’ve drawn out the deep images and ideas that lie underneath the story. In the production, the images/impressions have a contemporary feel to them. Our guests then talk about the all the things they had to consider when they worked with the child actors.
