Azaria: A Controversial Architypal Fairy Story

Maree Coote is a writer, illustrator, typographer, photographer and publisher. For this she blames the over-stimulation of a successful, award-winning career in advertising.  She chats with the Sunday Arts Magazine team on the inspiration behind the recent publication of her vividly illustrated ‘children’s picture book, Azaria: A True History.

Four years in the making and inspired by the imagery in picture books  from Asia and Russia rich in deep cultural meaning,  the story she reveals  explores what happened when the truth gets lost.

This sensitively crafted story for children delves into Australia’s most dramatic miscarriages of justice – a modern day fairy tale, cautionary and unforgettable. “We were as a nation readier to believe that a loving mother —with no motive, no means, no opportunity and no evidence —would do such an unlikely act, while ignoring that a dingo would do exactly what it would do in the wild,”
