Arts, Design, Music, Performing Arts, TV & Film, Visual Arts

Brendan went to a David Bowie fan event last night (18Jul) at ACMI and stayed for the exhibition David Bowie is, on from 16 July to 1 November. Brendan and David discuss this huge and immersive event (which has been showing in only a few cities worldwide) including costumes, artwork, Bowie’s designs, videos & film, theatricality, personas, re-invention and sexuality. Late, Brendan briefly mentions the doco Amy about Amy Winehouse. Brendan was angry and sad at the end especially about the men that failed her. He suggests to go back to the music and let that live on.

We have 3 different interviews today:

Director Matthew Lutton and Playwright Declan Greene talk about their background and their play I Am a Miracle on from 18 July to 9 August at the Malthouse Theatre. Matt is now Artistic Director at Malthouse and Declan has already had 2 plays shown there. Declan’s inspiration came from a real-life miscarriage of justice story where some people are less protected by law due to race, gender, sexuality etc. He incorporates these themes into the 3 different stories within the play; Matt then tells of the challenges of presenting these on stage.

Steve Thomas is director of the important and uplifting doco Freedom Stories. He talks about how he became a doco maker after coming to Australia in 1981 and now has many docos under his belt and also teaches film-making at VCA. He and some colleagues were interested in what happened to the asylum-seekers from 2001 at the time of Tampa and Children Overboard etc. He wanted the human stories behind the controversy. People talk about their experiences and there is a lot of feel-good content such as one man doing tiling at Molly Meldrum’s house. Freedom Stories is on at Nova cinema and there is a Q&A session on 23 & 24July with many guests.

Writer, director & composer Natasha Moszenin talks about her production The Insomnia Project which will be on at La Mama Courthouse from 29 July to 9 August. Natasha had studied music in Adelaide and has created music for theatre and film for many years. An insomniac herself, Natasha decided to make art out of it and wrote and composed music for the play as well as directed it. It follows 4 disparate people over one sleepless night from 10pm to 6am and shows the journey that insomniacs have as they try to sleep. The show was very well received last year when it showed briefly at Gallery 314 in Richmond.
