The I in Us is an Australian-based radio show about the intersex community, by the intersex community, for everyone.

Imagine growing up in a small, conservative rural area of Illinois, being raised a boy but never feeling wholly male or wholly female, not knowing why, and having to navigate your way through your family and community’s highly religious live view, while being surrounded by biological sex and gender stereotypes and influences that never quite matched your sense of self or the imposed expectations of others.

On this week’s episode of The I in Us, Paul and Little Jase welcome Rhys Cherry to the JOY airwaves, for the first time.

Never having been told they have variations in sex characteristics, something we hear far too frequently from our intersex community, Rhys has successfully navigated their way through life to enjoy positive friendships, successful education, fun creative pastimes, and for the past 20 years, a life living and working in Tokyo.

A few years ago, Rhys learned they have innate variations in sex characteristics, something that was hidden from them but that they now embrace, and now, finally making sense of their world, identifies as nonbinary, and, as Rhys puts it, can “try to live the best intersex life they can”.
