True crimes of the past rise to the surface as SBS launches the network event Deep Water, unearthing a gripping true crime story and a buried chapter of Australia’s recent history.
Deep Water: the drama
In the 1980s and 1990s a wave of murders bloodied the idyllic coastline of Sydney’s eastern suburbs. There were 80 murders, 30 unsolved cases and thousands of assaults. The victims: young homosexual men.
Deep Water is SBS’s new four-part drama series inspired by these true events, recontextualised to be set in contemporary Bondi, and featuring a stellar cast of Australian actors. Tonight on The Informer Dean Beck speaks to on of the writers of the drama, Kris Wyld, ahead of tonight’s premiere on SBS at 8.30pm.
Deep Water: the real story
Disturbing gang assaults were being carried out on coastal cliffs around Sydney, and mysterious deaths officially recorded as ‘suicide’, ‘disappearance’ and ‘misadventure’. Deep Water: The Real Story is a stunning feature-length documentary premiering Sunday October 16 at 8.30pm on SBS, in which individual stories are woven together by emotional first-person interviews and detailed re-enactments, piecing together the facts of these unsolved cases, decades later.
Deep Water: Online Investigations
Features in-depth extras around the Deep Water drama and Deep Water – The Real Story; with behind-the-scenes videos of the drama, including cast and crew interviews; sneak-peek extras; deleted scenes from the drama and a photo-gallery showcasing Bondi Beach.
