Last week, 13-year-old Tyrone Unsworth took his life following years of relentless bullying over his sexuality.
Today, Kids Helpline reported a steady increase in LGBTIQ kids reaching out to their counselling service for support.
The first half of tonight’s program discusses the effects of schoolyard bullying on LGBTIQ young people, what may be causing levels of distress to rise, and the need for school-based education and anti-bullying programs.

This Thursday is World Aids Day, and as we move towards elimination it’s time to talk about getting tested, regularly.
25,000 people in Australia have been diagnosed with HIV, however research suggests an additional 10% and 30% of that number are not diagnosed. 50% of people considered at risk get tested less than once a year.
So what’s stopping them? We spoke with Kathleen about the obstacles preventing men and women getting regular testing for HIV and STIs.
Guests:
- Shelley Argent, PFLAG national spokesperson
- Tony FitzGerald, Manager of Kids Helpline Counselling centre
- Kathleen Ryan from the Burnet Institute, and the evaluation manager at Pronto!
And don’t forget to check out the events on World Aids Day, Thursday Dec 1, – register and find more information here, or listen to JOY 94.9 on Dec 1 for highlights from the day.
