We start tonights show with Purchase Cup. The Cup is an inclusive rugby tournament with teams from the New Zealand Falcons, Sydney Convicts, Brisbane Hustlers and Melbourne Chargers all go head to head to win the annual title which Brisbane won this year. Last week saw Australian Rugby Union publicly support marriage equality, something all the teams and players were proud of, but Wallabies player Israel Folou tweeted he would not be supporting gay marriage, even though he has posed on the cover of Star Observer about tackling Homophobia in sport.
That’s not the only instance since the postal survey where many people in our community have realised that people who they thought supported them, don’t. And while everyone is entitled to their opinion, it doesn’t mean it hurts any less when someone in your family or who says they are your friend votes for you to not have equal rights. So how do you deal with that? Ross Jacobs from QLife tells us.
We’ve been hearing a lot over the past few weeks about the difficulties facing LGBTQIA youth. From high rates of mental illness and suicide, to being used as political fodder in the marriage equality debate, and having to see the NO campaign being levelled against them, it’s a difficult time to be young and queer. Luckily, there are places to go when it all feels too much. One of them is CAMP OUT, a five-day camp for young queer kids to escape to together and be allowed to be themselves. It’s a non-profit organisation run by volunteers, and could currently use your help to fund this year’s a future camps. We’re joined by Daisy Little, a crew member at Camp Out.
We round off tonights episode with audio from the Rally for Marriage Equality in Adelaide on the weekend, we hear from Senator Louise Pratt, PFLAG mum Michelle and Tiernan Brady from Australian Marriage Equality.
