When you go to visit your GP, do you disclose your sexual or gender preference?
Is this information that only matters when you’re having a sexual health check or is this something we should let our GP know every time we see them.
Ian Muchamore speaks to Professor Ruth McNair to see if medical practitioners should factor this into to their patient narrative, to help break down barriers of dialogue between the doctor and patient?
26th October is Intersex Awareness Day
Intersex is an umbrella term for a diverse group of people who don’t fit medical definitions of male or female.
1.7% of the population is born with intersex traits and children with intersex variations are frequently subjected to medically unnecessary interventions to make their bodies conform to a stereotypically male or female appearance.
There are many different types of intersex variations and today on Intersex Awareness Day, the time is taken to share the unique stories and experiences of intersex people around Australia and the world.
Joining us on The Informer is Tony Briffa, who, years ago came out publicly as intersex on 60 minutes and became the world’s first openly intersex elected official.
