How can peoples use of PrEP teach us about our health patterns for the future

On Friday the 9th of February we will find out whether pre-exposure prophylaxis will be approved for federal subsidy. This would bring the price of the daily preventative drug that reduces the risk of HIV infection down to an affordable cost of many

Australians. Although the decision is announced on Friday, on Wednesday evening, Fairfax Media reported that that a positive decision was ‘almost certain’.

PrEP is one prevent tool that stops HIV and when discussing its use, many raise the point that it doesn’t prevent the spread of other STIs like condoms does. We spoke to people taking PREP about why they do and what concerns come out of this usage.

Dean Arcuri speaks to people who have been taking PrEP as part of the trials as well as Martin Holt, Professor at the Centre for Social Research in Health at the University of NSW.

This segment of The Informer aired on  JOY 94.9 on 8th February 2018.
