Presentation isn’t everything, or is it?
When it comes to our communities, how a person presents can define how there are NOT choosing to express themselves rather than how they are, but what is in a snapshot of ourselves?
A recent study on DatingScout.com.au, compared 22 million profile pictures of online dating users from 13 countries, including 1.9 million from Australia and discovered that
- Nearly 75 per cent of photos roller blading are from lesbian online daters.
- 95 per cent of pictures with bagpipes are from men.
- More than 60 per cent of photos with kettlebells go to gay online daters.
- 100 per cent of photos with bacon are uploaded by men
- Gay men took the highest share when it comes to pictures with kanagroos. More than 30 per cent of all pictures with these Aussie marsupials to the gay male.
- 67 per cent of all fairy themed pictures are from women older than 45.
- Australian gay men don’t like leopards it seems with no leopard themed pics from them but 40 per cent from straight men…
- And there are more pictures of surfboards than people actually surfing.
If you took a pic of yourself, would you be presenting the way that you want people to see you?
And I am not talking about online dating, I am talking about real life.
When you outward appearance doesn’t fit in the binary, or when your expression doesn’t fit the label around you, what does that mean for you?
Max, a gender non-conforming gay man, who presents very androgynously in his fashion and aesthetic shared his story with Dean Arcuri about growing up and finding his voice to express who he, and what it meant to stand out amongst the crowd, even in a queer environment, just by being himself.
This segment aired on The Informer on JOY 94.9 on 26th March 2018.
