Remembering the past & protests past Mardi Gras in 1978

Sunday night at 10pm marked the 40th anniversary of the first Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, a protest which sparked a change in the fight for LGBTI rights and equality in Australia.

Over the weekend talks, celebrations and even a re-enactment took place in honour of this mark in our queer history. But we often don’t hear about what happened next.

As part of JOY and the Victorian AIDS Councils Series Well Well Well, Caleb Hawk looks back on the history of VAC as he speaks to members of the community and looks at moments in our history that have changed and defined who we are today.

Now on The Informer you are going to hear excerpts from interviews with Bruce Parnell and Adam Carr that didn’t make it to air here on JOY, as they talk about the protest that happened one month after Mardi Gras, in protest of the arrests.

Adam was one of the founding members of the Victorian AIDS Council and was prominent in gay media from the late 70s through to the 80s, and Bruce was VACs first manager of Education, and now works in international health initiatives in developing countries through the Burnet Institute.

You’ll be able to hear more from Bruce Parnell & Adam Carr by checking out JOY podcasts for Well Well Well, as Caleb Hawk looks back on the history of the Victorian AIDS Council, and the activism and historical moments that helped shape the changes and equal rights we have today.

This segment aired on The Informer on JOY 94.9 on 27th June 2018
