May 17 is the anniversary of the day in 1990 when the World Health Organisation removed the classification of homosexuality as a mental disorder.
The International Day Against Homophobia, or IDAHO, was established in 2004 to draw attention to the violence and discrimination that LGBTIQ communities continue to experience around the world.
In 2009, Transphobia was added to the title, and the acronym IDAHOT became popular.
Biphobia was added last year, and the acronym IDAHOBIT is getting increasing use in English-speaking countries.
May 17 is now celebrated in more than 130 countries, including 37 where same-sex acts are illegal. Three countries celebrating IDAHOBIT for the first time this year are Bhutan, Brunei, and Vanuatu.
More locally, Victorian Premier Dan Andrews has acknowledged IDAHOBIT by publicly releasing a sample of the homophobic emails he has received, in response to his government’s support for Safe Schools, Pride March, and the LGBTIQ community in general. If you have the stomach for it, you can see these emails on Pedestrian.TV.
For more positive IDAHOBIT news, we spoke to Sam Bouzanquet, a teenager from the Sunshine Coast, who co-founded Queensland’s first recognised LGBTIQ high school group. We also talked to Cr Ali Cupper from Mildura Rural City Council, and James Price from Mildura Pride, about LGBTIQ inclusion in Mildura and surrounds.
Presenter: Claudine Chionh
