Transgender in the Workforce

Michelle Sheppard opens up about her experience of being transgender in the workplace

Michelle Sheppard opens up about the professional challenges associated with transitioning.

For transgender individuals, transitioning is a multi-layered challenge, and one of those layers is finding an inclusive workplace culture.

In recent times, many organisations preach detailed anti-discrimination policies designed to protect LGBTI individuals. But do these policies help to create a fundamental change in cultural attitudes towards transgender employees? Or are they just empty rhetoric?

“Culture eats policy for breakfast”

On Monday’s edition of The Informer we take a closer look at some of the professional realities the transgender community face, both in and out of employment. We are joined by JOY’s own Michelle Sheppard who through her own challenging experience of transitioning at age 36 wants to help others move forward in their careers instead of being held back by their gender.

We are also joined by Director of Transgender Victoria Sally Goldner to discuss some of the repercussions gender-related workplace discrimination has on the transgender community.

And we drop in on Shannon Power from the Star Observer to catch up on their latest headlines.
