Discrimination and Anti-Equality in TAS and WA
It may soon be legal to incite of hatred, serious contempt and severe ridicule against LGBTIA people in Tasmania, if done for religious purposes.
A bill to amend Tasmania’s Anti-Discrimination Act will be voted on soon that would see religious groups exempt from some sections of the Act and would see discrimination based on race, disability, sexual orientation or religion be considered acceptable if for “religious purposes”.
“Religious purposes” has not been defined in the amendment, road-blocks

The 2016 Anti-Discrimination Amendment Bill is due to be voted on later this week.  It has been slammed by the Australian Lawyers for Human Rights group, as well as Tasmania’s own Anti-Discrimination commissioner Robin Banks.

Banks was not shown the proposed legislation before it was made public in August.

We speak with Robin Banks and Nicholas Stewart, co-chair of Australian Lawyers for Human Right’s LGBTI Rights subcommittee.

And LGBTIQ people attending the Royal Perth Show last week were distressed to find large anti-equality stickers had been put up on road-signs around the event.

Greens Senator Rachel Siewart joins the program to discuss.

Tasmanian Attorney General Dr Vanessa Goodwin was not available for comment.
