The Source

2 Oct 2017

Show 008 / Ghetto Love Freak

Music

Episode 8 features songs from MiyaDolly Parton, and Freemasons.

The final track on Episode 7 was “Stop the Rock” by Apollo 440. The song contains samples from the Status Quo track “Caroline”.

“The Source” explores popular music with the aim to discover if it has been “borrowed” from other songs.  The show will go back to the source of popular songs, and play the songs they have sampled from.

Song Notes

Janet Jackson / Change – Luther Vandross

All for You (Janet Jackson) released back in 2001. The song is about flirting with someone on the dancefloor. This song earnt Janet the title of “The Queen of Radio” due to its success on the airwaves.

The sample from this song is from a group named “Change” with iconic member Luther Vandross. The song is called “The Glow of Love” and has also been sampled by UK based Phats and Smalls in their song “Turn Around”.

DJ Kool / Kool & the Gang

That was “Let Me Clear My Throat” by DJ Kool. Released back in 1996

The musical content of this song consists entirely of two samples: the introductory fanfare of “Hollywood Swinging” (1974) by Kool & The Gang, used in both the intro and pre-chorus, and “The 900 Number” (1987) by The 45 King (which itself includes a two-bar loop of the saxophone riff that was lifted from “Unwind Yourself” (1968) by Marva Whitney), used in the verses and chorus.

Antoine Clamaran and Agua Sin Gas / The Shapeshifters

“Freak It” by Antoine Clamaran and Agua Sin Gas has a sample that was taken from the 2004 track “Lola’s theme” by the UK house duo “the Shapeshifters”.

The orchestral sounding music in the song inspired the emergence of similar orchestral-sounding dance music over the following two years (such as Inaya Day’s “Nasty Girl”), before more electronic dance music became popular in mid-2006. These sounds also owe much to 1970s disco, and so the resulting genre can be described as nu-disco or disco house.

Lola’s theme has sampled from Anthony White’s “Love Me Tonight”, and “What About My Love” by Johnnie Taylor. Check them out below.
