We are please to introduce you to Emily Rowe, who is the first openly transgender footballer, a player with the Shepparton Bears in the new Northern Country Women’s League of Victoria.

In October last year, the now 35-year-old began hormone replacement therapy to transition into a woman and as far as she is concerned, she is just another female who wants to play footy at the highest level.

Emily says “There is an opportunity to educate and improve the understanding of the reality of gender diverse people. There is so much information and we can have that conversation and bring everyone else along for the ride. We want to put our arms around people and say, ‘This is who we are, what can we do to help you understand us’. The support from my team but also the entire Shepparton community has been incredible. I am just another one of the girls wanting to have another kick.”

She shares with us her story and what it means to be a transgender woman in the world of Aussie Rules Football.
