Only Tongue can Tell by Trashcan Sinatras. 1990 single from this Scottish band – their second single release. Both came from their debut album, Cake.
Hey 19 by Steely Dan. Guitar & bass player Walter Becker, who co-founded the band in 1972, died this week, he was just 67. Named after a dildo in William Burroughs’s countercultural classic The Naked Lunch. This is their biggest hit from my era…most of their hits were from the early 70s.
Rikki don’t lose that number by Steely Dan. 1974 request.
+There is a light that never goes out by The Smiths. Request.
Gaslighting Abbie by Steely Dan. 2000 Request.
+Bad Reputation by Joan Jett. 1981 punk release that didn’t go anywhere…but is fantastic! And is now well known for having been included in a film and a tv show.
+Love House by Samantha Fox. From her third album, I wanna have some Fun. The album was from 1988. I think the single is too, except in the US where it came out a year later…but I’ve also seen 1986 as the single release year so I don’t know…
+Goldilox by King’s X. Their debut single from 1988. Featuring Doug Pinnick, aka Poundhound, who came out in 1998. Prior to this, their albums were sold in Christian music venues…though all 3 members have disavowed any connection to the genre.
The Money Spyder by James Taylor Quartet. Not THAT James Taylor…these folks are British acid jazz musos. This one is from 1987.
The Colours by The Men They Couldn’t Hang. More British obscurity…punk folk or folk punk… This is from their second album, Waiting for Bonaparte, from 1988.
Go, go, go by Rip, Rig and Panic. a post-punk band founded in 1980 and disbanded in 1983 – featuring Neneh Cherry. The band was named after a jazz album of the same name by Roland Kirk. This is from their 1981 debut album, God.
Aussies – B
*The Voice by The Boys Next Door. From their 1979 experimental album, Door Door.
*Early Warning by Baby Animals. Formed in Sydney in 1989 by singer Suze DeMarchi, drummer Frank Celenza, guitarist Dave Leslie, and bassist Eddie Parise. This is their first single, released in 1991 along with their debut, self-titled album, which contained the single.
*Strange Territory by The Bamboos. From their 1985 album, Rarer than Rocking Horse Shit. They were a Perth band and put out this one album.
*Breakaway by Big Pig. 1988 single by this band that was started in London by Aussie drummer Oleh Witer with 8 of his drumming colleagues. I love it!
*Freemason by Boxcar. Sydney band. This is from their 1990 debut album, Vertigo.
*I have no words by Broken Voices. The brainchild project of founding-Little River Band member Graeham Goble. After becoming unhappy with the direction the band was going into he decided to quit with Little River Band and started recording his first project together with LRB guitarist Stephen Housden and well-known female singer Susie Ahern. This is from their self-titled 1990 debut.
Hand of Love by The Sound. 1987 single, their penultimate. The band formed in South London by Adrian Borland. He sadly committed suicide back in 1999 after battling with mental health issues for many years. If you need help, get help! There’s no weakness in calling Beyond Blue or Switchboard or talking to a friend or family member!
Never Take Me Alive by Spear of Destiny. Though they’ve put out 13 studio albums so far, plus loads of compilations, live material, many singles…this 1987 single is their only real hit (ish), reaching 14 on the UK charts.
From Across the Kitchen Table by The Pale Fountains. Their last single, released in 1985 by Virgin records. They were from Liverpool and existed 1981-87…fine musical years!
Dear God by XTC. 1987. The Sarah McLachlan cover is pretty good but the original is better.
Roses are Red by Mac Band. 1987, the biggest hit for this Flint, MI band featuring the four McCampbell brothers. In fact, this debut album was called: The Mac Band featuring the McCampbell Brothers.
