Can you Dig It by The Mock Turtles. 1991 single that was the B-side of Lay Me Down. The record company needed a name for the B-side to start on the cover art and Martin Coogan had been watching the film The Warriors which featured the rallying call, “Can you dig it?”. The name came first and then the band went off to write the song.

Mother by Danzig. New Jersey metal band formed in 1987. This is from their debut, self-titled album from 1988 but In 1993–1994, almost six years after its original release, the song became a hit on radio and earned some rotation on MTV after a music video incorporating live footage was created to promote the band’s new EP. The original video had been rejected by MTV for showing what looked like a chicken sacrifice…though no animals were harmed.

Don’t Give me Your Life by Alex Party. Italian dance music project of the electronic dance and house music genre. The band consisted of the Italian brothers Paolo and Gianni Visnadi (also of Livin’ Joy), DJ Alex Natale and vocalist Robin ‘Shanie’ Campbell. This is their best known single, released in1994.

Sex Maggot by Goo Goo Dolls. From Jed, their 1989 album, it was their second album release. This has been really hard to find!

Go by Moby. His sophomore single, released in 1991…also the first single from his debut, self-titled album. Moby’s real name is Richard Melville Hall…who knew? He’s one of those 90s artists whose name I’ve heard but never knew anything about him or by him.

3 Times by Cat Power. From her 1995 debut album, Dear Sir. She’s an American indie artist who is also known as Chan Marshall.

The Love has Gone by Rick Astley. From his 1987 album, Whenever you Need Somebody, his first and best selling.

*Know your Product by The Saints. 1978 release from the band’s second album, Eternally Yours. It is quite different from the punk-orientation of their first release, with the addition of the prominent horn section. The saints are Ed Kuepper, Ivor Hay and Chris Bailey.

*Still In Love with You by Sherbet. From their 1977 album Photoplay, which was their 6th studio album in as many years. It was called Magazine in the US but failed to chart. Their next album was released under the name Highway when their marketers decided that Sherbet was a lame name and was affecting sales…it didn’t help and they weren’t heard from again in the US till the internet made music global.

*Be Patient by Serious Young Insects. Australian music from 1982, featuring Richard Pleasance from Boom Crash Opera and Government Drums. And of course, SeaChange!

*YouTube: New King Jack by Sekret Sekret. from Sydney, 1979 – 1984. Led by the Irish born David Virgin, the band we’re hugely influencial in the Sydney underground music scene and achieved 5 Number 1hits in the Australian Independent Music Charts, including this one from 1981.

*Space Angel by Supernaut. From their debut 1976 self-titled album. They only put out this album under this name. Two years later they were The Nauts, less glam rock, more new wave, and put out a second self-titled album. They broke up in 1980.

*Play the Game by Wendy Stapleton. 1983 single from the second line-up of Wendy and the Rockettes, though I’m pretty sure this recording is from a bit later. Wendy herself is a well-known actor and singer in Australia – she played Delta Goodrem’s mum on Neighbours and Dusty Springfield in I Only Want to Be With You – The Dusty Springfield Story.

I’m Your Man by Leonard Cohen. Title track from his 1988 album, his 8th since starting out in 1967.

Can’t Shake the Feeling by Big Fun. From their only studio album, 1990’s A Pocketful of Dreams. They were a British boy band produced by Stock Aitken Watermen, the trio that worked with Kylie, Dead or Alive and many others.

Women by Lou Reed. From his 1982 album, The Blue Mask, his 11th.

It’s a heartache by Bonnie Tyler. From her 1978 album Natural Force, her second. I have to admit to really liking her voice.

Where is My Mind by The Pixies. From their 1988 album, Surfer Rosa, their first full length album.

Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie by Black Flag. From their 1981 album, Damaged, featuring their third lead, Henry Rollins.
