Show 251

High on a Happy Vibe by Urban Cookie Collective. Request from Ray from last week. 1994 track

Jack a Roe by Jerry Garcia. This is from a rare solo acoustic show he did in 1982. Garcia died in August 1995 of a heart attack while he was in rehab for drug addiction. Surely you all know he fronted The Grateful Dead…

If Only I could by Sidney Youngblood. Request from Ray from last week. From his 1989 album Feeling Free.

Mexican Radio by Wall of Voodoo. US one hit wonder band, though they made quite a number of records in the 1980s, including The Ugly American in Australia, featuring the song Crazy Crazy Melbourne – which, sadly, isn’t very good.

I eat Cannibals by Toto Coelo. Request.

Purple Rain by Prince. Request.

Rain by Madonna. Request.

*Party by Christine Anu. Request.

Love Song by Madonna and Prince. Request.

Aussies from 1988

*Lost by The Church. From the album Starfish, from 1988 and their 6th and most successful.

*You Whisper by Marty Wilson-Piper. Front man for The Church did some solo work as well. This one is from his second solo album, Art Attack, from 1988.

*Streets of Your Town by The Go-Betweens. From 16 Lovers Lane (1988), the group’s most commercial offering, providing this alternative radio hit, the band’s biggest chart hit in both the UK and Australia.

*When There’s This Party by Ed Kuepper. From Everybody’s Got To, Kuepper’s third solo album. It was recorded in 1988 and released on the Hot label.

*All I do by Daryl Braithwaite. 1988 single from his 1988 solo album, Edge. It was his second, coming 9 years after the debut.

*I think I love you by Ratcat. Ratcat formed in 1986 in Sydney, and were a mainstay of that city’s live music scene. This single is from 1988.

Koyaanisqatsi by Philip Glass. Request.

For Whom the Bell Tolls by Fad Gadget. 1982 single from Under The Flag, his third album as Fad Gadget. He also produced music under his own name, Frank Tovey, from 1984 forwards. He died at just 45 of a heart attack.

Come Home by James. From Manchester, England. They formed in 1982 and were active throughout the 1980s, but most successful during the 1990s. This track was released first in 1989 but went nowhere. When James signed a deal with a new record company, it was remixed and re-released in 1990. I don’t know which version this is…

This is Pop by XTC. British band active from 1976-2005, though they didn’t tour after 1982 when founder Andy Partridge suffered horrendous stage fright and other anxiety disorders while withdrawing from a valium addiction. This track was released on their 1978 debut album White Music, while a completely reworked version was released as a single the same year…I’m not sure which one this is.

The Great Pretender by Freddie Mercury. 1987 solo effort covering the Platters’ hit from 1955. Some people use this name to refer to Mercury himself.

Pure by The Lightning Seeds. Liverpool band that formed in 1989 around Ian Broudie, of Big in Japan fame…the band, not the song. This is their debut single, released in 1990, also included on their debut album, Cloudcukooland. It’s also the title track of their first compilation album.
