White Lines (Don’t do it) by Grandmaster Flash & Melle Mel. Released as a 12″ in 1983 on Sugar Hill Records. The song, which warns against the dangers of cocaine, addiction, and drug smuggling, is one of Melle Mel’s signature tracks. The bassline is sampled from a performance of the Sugar Hill house band covering “Cavern”, a single by post-punk band Liquid Liquid.

Beat Dis by Bomb the Bass. This is their 1987 debut single. It was actually released in the UK disguised as a U.S. import in an attempt to conjure the mystique of Bomb the Bass being an underground New York act. It worked and the single eventually reached number two on the UK charts, far exceeding expectations.

Nobody’s Diary by Yazoo. The only single released from their 1983 album, You and Me Both. The song was written by Yazoo vocalist Alison Moyet.

Never Let me Down Again by Depeche Mode. The second single from Music for the Masses, from 1987. Their 6th studio album.

Mother Stands for Comfort (instrumental) by Kate Bush. Request.

Shades of Blue by The Family Stand. Request.

Perfect by Fairground Attraction. The band’s first single, released in March 1988. It reached number one on 9 May 1988 on the UK Singles Chart, where it stayed for one week, and stayed in the chart for thirteen weeks. It also reached number one in South Africa as well as here in Australia for three weeks in August and September 1988. The band’s only other claim to fame is that Eddi Reader, Scottish vocalist well known for her solo work, was their lead vocalist.

Aussies with X in the title for May 10th

*Mother by X. X formed in Sydney in 1978. Bass player Ian Rilen was looking for a new gig after quitting Rose Tattoo (because they weren’t hard enough!). This is their debut single from 1979.

*My City of Sydney by XL Capris. This a punk version of Tommy Leonetti’s “My City of Sydney” (written as a closer for Ch7 at the end of the day) and was released as a single in 1979. This single was the only Australian disc found in legendary UK DJ John Peel’s “battered wooden box” of 142 favourite records when, following his death in 2004, the contents of the box were revealed to the public in a Channel 4 television special.

*50 years by Uncanny X-Men. Their highest charting single, which reached #6 on the singles chart, and came from their debut album from 1985, Coz Life Hurts. Melbourne band fronted by Brian Mannix.

*Black & White by INXS. 1983 single from the 1982 album, Shabooh Shoobah, their third album but the first to be released worldwide.

*It Only Hurts When I’m Laughing by Mi-sex. 1980 single from their second album, Space Race.

*Insect by Boxcar. 1989 single from their ‘Vertigo’ album released in 1990.

Pacific State by 808 State. an English electronic music group, formed in 1987 in Manchester, taking their name from the Roland TR-808 drum machine and their common state of mind. They were formed by Graham Massey, Martin Price and Gerald Simpson, and they released their debut album Newbuild in September 1988. That first album garnered no single releases; this track is the first release from their second album, Ninety.

Pump up the Volume by M/a/r/r/s. A 1987 one-off recording act formed by the groups A.R. Kane and Colourbox, which only released one commercial disc. It became “a one-hit wonder of rare influence” because of their international hit “Pump Up the Volume”, and nominated for a Grammy Award in 1989.
