Show 369
Queen of Eyes by Soft Boys. From their 1980 album, Underwater Moonlight, their second. They were English and active as Soft Boys on and off from 1976-2003, though their leader, Robyn Hitchcock, certainly did other things during that time as well.
+Runnin’ Around by The B52s. The B-side to Rock Lobster (which I’ve already played this year). They were released 40 years ago!
+Lipstick by The Buzzcocks. LGBTI for Pete Shelley. B-side to their 1978 single, Promises.
+Rush Hour by Jane Wiedlin. 1988 solo track, probably her best known. Bisexual guitarist from the GoGos.
+Mind Warp by Patrick Cowley. American (from Buffalo!) disco and Hi-NRG dance music composer and recording artist. Next to Giorgio Moroder, he is often credited as a pioneer of electronic dance music. He moved from Buffalo to San Francisco, worked with Sylvester as well as his own work…died of AIDS the year this track was released, 1982.
Shattered Dreams by Johnny Hates Jazz. From Turn Back the Clock in 1988. It was their first hit…and they’re British.
Amama by Pink Project. Italo disco off their 1982 double album, Domino.
Little Russian by Mr. Zivago. aka, Massimo Rastrelli, Italian artist’s best known track, released in 1987.
New York’s Movin’ by Ahzz. I think it’s their only release…, from 1981. Ahzz is Osborne Hunter and some other guy.
Sexy Dancer by Prince. Request.
Aussies – H
*Love At First Night by Kim Hart. Entered the Australian chart on May 26, 1980, peaked at number 6. This is more like it. Flash-in-the-pan New Zealand singer Kim Hart blended pop and disco to great effect.
*Hindsight by The Hummingbirds. Their 4th non-album single released in 1987 from Phantom records; Dragged Over the Coals was the B-side.
*Wedding Hotel by Rowland S Howard and Nikki Sudden. 1987 12” EP from these two. Howard was an Australian rock musician, guitarist and songwriter, best known for his work with the post-punk group The Birthday Party and his subsequent solo career, but he’d done all sorts of stuff throughout the 80s…including a number of duets and collaborations with Sudden, an English musician. Both guys are dead now…
*Nites Like These by The Hollowmen. This song is from the mini album Blues Trains and Gravel Lanes, released in 1986. They were a Melbourne band active from the mid-80s till the mid-90s and made up of Billy Baxter, D.J.Butler, Mal Stanley, Jon Von Goes, and Paul Johnstone.
*What a Bitch is Love by Marcia Hines. 1981 single from the album Take it From the Boys, her sixth.
*Cruelest Plague by Helvelln. This is from their 1991 self-titled album, they were a Melbourne band. They are also new for me tonight.
Let’s Lovedance tonight by Gary’s Gang. 1979 track from this American R&B band active from 77-85.
Drug Song by Janko Nilovic. Turkish-born, Montenegrin pianist, poet, and composer, who has lived in France since 1960. 1975 track.
Gangsters by The Specials. Also known as The Special AKA, are an English 2 Tone and ska revival band formed in 1977 in Coventry. 1979 non-album single debut release.
On My Radio by The Selecter. 1979 single. The band’s name is based on the term “selector”, which is a Jamaican word for disc jockey. Another English ska band.
Touch in the Night by Silent Circle. German Eurodisco band formed in 1985. This is their debut single from 1985.
Hey Hey Guy by Ken Laszlo. Italo disco from 1984. His real name is Gianni Coraini and he rocked the 80s in Europe.
