IAS 2023 – HIV Science as Art

Brisbane recently hosted the 12th International Conference on HIV Science (IAS 2023). Held in conjunction with the conference, HIV Science as Art is a new initiative pairing HIV positive artists from around the world with internationally renowned HIV scientists. The pairings then created original works that speak to some of the scientific advancements being presented at the global HIV conference.

Cal Hawk talks to one of the exhibition’s scientific curators Dr Talia Mota as well as one of the pairings – Taiwanese artist Kairon (Ren-Kai) Liu and social scientist Prof Kane Race. Kai talks about creating his piece and issues that surfaced in bringing the artwork into Australia. Then Kane speaks to his role in the project as well as the importance of social science in the ongoing response to HIV.
