A New Light For HIV Health In Victoria.

Arts, Health, News & Politics, Society & Culture

Just over 30 years ago, the world changed. For gay men, their world collapsed.
Since its discovery, AIDS has killed over 30 million people. In 2009, 1.8 Million people died of HIV/AIDS.
Worldwide it is estimated that 33 Million 500 thousand people are living with HIV – Half of those people are women and 2.5 Million of them are children.
Every hour, 7,000 people contract HIV.
In Australia, nearly 30,000 people have contracted HIV since it was discovered – sadly nearly 7000 of them have died.
Today there are more than 20 thousand Australians living with HIV – 85% of them are Gay men.
The last 30 years has seen gay men take back their sexuality and the empowerment of the HIV Health Care Sector. But with 1000 gay men in Australia contracting HIV each year, something has to change if Australia is to achieve its promise of halving new infections by 2015.
In Victoria, the man who has signed up to take that challenge on board is the new Executive Director for the Victorian AIDS Council / Gay Men’s Health Centre, Matt Dixon.
